Monkseaton Morrismen And Folk Dance Team
Monkseaton Morris Men woke up on the 1st January 2010 to a very wintery picture. About 4 inches of snow had fallen over night and was still falling. Not at all deterred by this, the team arrived a little bit earlier than planned at the Ship Inn to clear the dance area. 30 minutes later and it was all done and the team headed off to start their dancing at the Lawns residential home. The 39th year of dancing outside the Ship Inn went off with out too much drama and every ones injuries seemed to hold up. See the picture Gallery New Years Day 2010 to get the flavour of the event. The crowds were down on last year but their continued support is much welcomed by the team. Thanks. We are always keen for new members to join and take an active role in the dancing so if you are at all interested in learning more about the team, the dances we perform, or would like to join the team, please come along to one of the events listed on the 2010 programme or pop along to one of our practice nights (every Monday) or contact us through the telephone numbers and emails listed at the bottom of this page. Bring a friend along and give it a go, there's nothing to lose. The dancing is fun, good exercise and you will be afforded a warm welcome where ever you go. Monkseaton were formed in 1955 and the team are the leading exponents of the traditional sword and country dances of Northumbria with an international reputation amongst folk dance circles throughout Europe. Meeting on Monday evenings, at the 21st Whitley Bay Scout Hut (beside the Whitley Bay Ice-Rink Hillheads Road) from 8pm–10pm, the team perfect their dances and organise performances for fund raising events, fetes, social gatherings and festivals both here and abroad.
